An elegant brand celebrating the unique features of special events venue, Union Kirk

Langstane Kirk houses two venues — downstairs, the iconic bar and restaurant SOUL, that has served Aberdeen city for over 20 years. The stunning upstairs space was renovated by PB Devco in 2022 into a striking and chic venue, and Union Kirk was born.

The building itself is full of character and gothic features — designed by James Matthew and built in 1869. Local architects Tinto Architecture took on the renovation project, carefully and sympathetically converting whilst retaining many of the traditional features including the stunning stained-glass windows, vaulted ceiling, and intricate cornicing that you would expect to find in a kirk.

For the logo design, I reference the stunning circular stained glass window above what has become the focal point of the venue. Carefully recreating elements, continually referencing imagery of the window design, I created a decorative circular logomark that accompanies a minimalist and elegant wordmark below. A logo that is uniquely Union Kirk, and embodies the elegance and grandeur of the venue.

Initially, a logo design and branding was required promptly to get the venue fitted with appropriate signage, branded menus and other print materials featuring the venue logo such as staff uniforms. Following this, I have continued to service all of Union Kirk’s design requirements - from wedding brochures to conference documents, social media graphics, website design and maintenance, and more.

Working in partnership for over a decade

Over many years of working with PB Devco, I’ve completed a wide variety of design projects for the company, as well as supported in marketing endeavours, provided creative direction and pitched ideas. From vinyl signage and van graphics to websites, menu designs, event/campaign identities, pop-up brands, packaging - you name it, I’ve probably delivered it. Hospitality is a fast-paced industry with frequently evolving requirements, so it is normal for there to be occasions where work needs to be delivered within tight timescales too.

As a family owned business, the PB Devco company directors are passionate and motivated about bringing a range of premium dining and entertainment experiences to Aberdeen city and shire.

Unlike large chain venues, which have one brand with the same experience in each premises, PB Devco operate venues that are all different in offering and style; their venue branding and collateral play a key role in contributing to the customer’s unique venue experience.

As well as this direct working relationship with PB Devco, I also communicate and align with their other contractors where required - for example, sharing moodboards and branding ideas with architects/interior designers to ensure the brand is consistent with the venue’s interiors atmosphere. I also work with local videography studio Attic87 in providing social media graphics to assist with social content, and other third party suppliers or contractors where required.
